Stay off St. Louis-area Roads if possible

A band of sleet and snow hit the St. Louis area early Sunday, creating icy and slippery road conditions for drivers in the region. And the roads only look to get worse with a second wave of predominantly snow expected to hit the region Sunday afternoon. Those conditions had the Missouri Highway Patrol warning residents to stay off the roads if possible.

“It’s going to be a treacherous travel day, so everybody really needs to stay put if they can,” said Sgt. Al Nothum with the Missouri Highway Patrol. “You’re not only doing yourself a favor, but all emergency crews and MoDOT as well so they can get out there on the roadways and do their thing.” Icy roads are believed to have caused two separate wrecks that shut down sections of Interstate 70.

Several semi-trucks were involved in a chain reaction crash on the interstate in Warren County, forcing officials to shut down the highway for several hours. All but one eastbound I-70 lanes were still closed in the area as of 9:45 a.m. In north St. Louis, a section of Interstate 70 was closed after several vehicles slide off the roadway. No other major wrecks had been reported by late Sunday morning. Nothum said anyone stranded on the road should use their phone to call *55, which will send the caller to the nearest Highway Patrol headquarters.
