NHAI FY14 Report card: Low response for bids

NHAI's attempts of kick starting all their projects hasn’t quite taken off with many road developers becoming more and more cautious of bidding for road projects, due to slowing traffic on the national highways and with banks too becoming skeptical on lending to the sector or road developers.

Out of the 25 projects which were bid last year, 9 projects (mostly the BOT or toll projects) have not received a single bidder. While most players that have won the bids for the EPC contracts are relatively smaller players, like GR Infra, Dilip Buildcon and DRA Infracon but the larger players have stayed away.   Larsen and Toubro  and  Gammon have bagged one EPC contract each.

It is understood that the projects that have been awarded have been at a slightly lower than expected price, the reason for which seems to be very clear - the  decelerating commercial vehicle traffic growth has added troubles for cash strapped road developers, and thus they are shying away from bidding for this. Therefore, it can safely be said that it has not been a very good year as far as these road projects are concerned.
