Punjab Congress to agitate against Power Tariff hike

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa said the party would start an agitation to oppose proposed 12 Percent hike in power tariff in the state. He said it was surprising that the move had been initiated at the time when Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) had been in profits during the last two years. Bajwa said that people would not tolerate the additional burden. He said Punjab Congress would launch agitation against Parkash Singh Badal-led government on the issue.

He said that on the industrial front, the situation was dismal as evident from an ASSOCHAM study despite tall claims being made by deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal, who had some months ago organized a mega investment summit to showcase Punjab.

Bajwa said that while new investments had stopped coming to Punjab, projects already in pipeline had suffered a cost overrun of about 47 Percent to INR 57,000 crore. About 70 Percent of the new projects had remained non-starters in 2013-14. He said that according to trade body's study, growth of new investment had declined and slipped to an average negative growth rate of 43 Percent over the past three years. From about INR 33,000 crore in 2008-09, new investment had decreased to about INR 4,600 crore.
