Power gear makers seek new government's help to Revive Industry

A lobby group representing more than 800 power and electrical equipment makers has requested the new government to look into issues that plague the sector to ensure timely completion of power projects and provide a level playing field to allow domestic manufacturers to compete with surging imports.

The Indian Electrical Equipment Manufacturing Association (IEEMA) has said that the government should put the sector back on a high growth trajectory by improving availability of funds, providing fuel linkages and faster regulatory clearances, and improving the operational performance of power distribution utilities, among other measures.

"An efficient power supply system is a key ingredient for economic growth and quality of life. Assured availability of quality power at reasonable cost will not only act as a catalyst in the socio-economic development of the nation but also enhance the global competitiveness of the domestic industry leading to greater employment generation and higher levels of per capita income," reads a statement by the IEEMA.

The industry is not able to utilise its built-up capacity due to sluggish domestic demand on account of the slowdown in the power sector and a surge in imports of electrical equipment in recent years. This is impacting the commercial viability of the domestic electrical equipment makers.

The IEEMA has asked the government to provide a level playing field in the domestic market for Indian manufacturers to compete with imported equipment. The industry body wants preferential treatment to the electric equipment made in India.
