Highway Department plans Road work in June

The Highway Department will start reclaiming Tunxis Trail  and Mattatuck Trail  on June 2. The roads will be closed to through traffic but will be open for those that live on the roads. After those two roads are reclaimed, on June 5, the department will start to reclaim Poverty Hollow.

Poverty Hollow will be closed to through traffic during the day, from 7 to 5 p.m. in order for work to be done. People who live on Poverty Hollow will be allowed through, said Jeff Hanson, highway superintendent. All other traffic will be detoured to Hopewell Woods Road to Route 58.

The roads will be open at night, said Mr. Hanson. The week of June 9, Mr. Hanson said the department will start to pave Tunxis and Mattatuck and Poverty Hollow. These three roads will use the remaining funds from the three-year road bond that expires on June 30. Around June 19, when schools are out for the summer, Mr. Hanson said, the department will do an overlay on Cross Highway.

The highway crews will do a two mile overlay on the road and then come back in July and to a micro-surface treatment. First Selectman Julia Pemberton said the funds used to overlay Cross Highway are from the town aid road (TAR) fund.

Funding for the four-year road plan that Mr. Hanson presented to the Board of Selectmen last month has yet to be determined. The plan went before the Long Range Planning Committee and a recommendation will be made to the Board of Finance on how the town should fund the road plan. In addition to the road work planned for June, highway crews continue to sweep town roads, cleaning up the sand used from winter storms.

“We’re trying to sweep every day,” said Mr. Hanson. “We’re almost done with the east side and we’re moving to the middle and west side.”
