Goyal visits Gujarat today to study Modi's model for Power

As Union power minister Piyush Goyal visits Gujarat on Friday to study PM Narendra Modi’s Gujarat model of power management, the state government is all set to showcase numerous strengths of the model.

To begin with, the state is among the few power surplus states today with an installed capacity of 22,524 MW against a demand of 13,000 MW. “Our demand alone equals the total installed capacity of a state like UP,” says a senior official of the state energy department.

With the demands of its 1.35 crore consumers being comfortably met even as most other states are facing unrelenting outages, the Gujarat government is selling 20-22 million units of surplus power per day through open exchange.

The state had sold a total of 7,283 million units for the fiscal 2013-14 amounting to about INR 2,300 crore to Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra and even UP though this was discontinued post the elections. Gujarat’s minister for finance, energy and industries Saurabh Patel that the proactive approach has made Gujarat “at least 10 years ahead of other states in terms of power adequacy”.
