Power generation in AP back to normal as Coal supplies improve

The power generation in AP Genco plants has come back to normalcy with the coal supply position improving in the last two days. It now has stocks for 4-5 days and is in the process of augmenting additional coal supplies. In the past two days outages in couple of power generation plants and inadequate supply of quality of coal and in some places poor quality coal had impacted power generation and also supply to the consumers across both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Outages end

K Vijayanand, Managing Director of AP Genco, “All the plants are working at normal production capacity and we expect coal supplies to get better. There were couple of days of generation disruption in two plants in the State due to outages. They have been restored and the generation is back to normalcy.”
According to the current data, the energy demand in Andhra Pradesh is about 135.5 million units per day and the supply met was 123.3 mu, with the deficit of 12.23 mu. In the case of Telangana, the demand was 128.1 mu and the demand met was 121.6 mu, leaving a gap of 6.4 mu.

Ongoing projects

Asked about the ongoing projects, he said that AP Genco is currently in the process of stabilising the unit one of 800 MW at Krishnapatnam and the unit two of 800 MWwill be ready by July end. With the addition of the second unit and other capacity, AP Genco would be able to add about 1300 MW by year-end.

“In addition, Hinduja project will add about 1000 MW and the first unit of Thermalpowertech of 660 MW will also be ready. While there will be capacity addition, we also anticipate demand increase putting pressure on the system to augment new capacities,” he explained.
