Drive to bolster use of LNG

A high-level meeting of Mission LNG has decided to intensify the campaign for widespread use of the gas in commercial and domestic spheres across Kerala. The meeting held under the auspices of the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry decided to hold a meeting of all stakeholders again on June 18 to form a Council to pursue the necessary follow-up action to achieve the target.

The deliberations focused on the problems being faced in reaching LNG in different regions of the State through pipe. Despite a blanket clearance covering all government departments for laying pipelines in 2010, the GAIL has not fully succeeded yet in laying pipelines in all the required areas in Kerala.

This has turned out to be the major hurdle in increasing the Kochi Petronet LNG terminal’s capacity utilisation and further expansion. MP Sukumaran Nair, Director, Centre for Green Technology and Management in his presentation said that the delay in utilising the LNG is costing the State dearly. It had suffered a loss of around INR 75,000 crore to INR 80,000 crore because of the decade-long delay in commissioning the Kochi Petronet LNG plant.

Further delay in the full utilisation of the LNG readily available at the Kochi Petronet LNG plant would adversely affect the State’s economy, he said.

ISISAN Energy Solutions Pvt Ltd Director Augusthy M’chalil said that his company had almost completed the process of the utilisation of LNG by HLL in Thiruvananthapuram. The company is applying the cryogenic technique in moving the required LNG by road.
