Centre to Fast-track Road connectivity in Uttarakhand

For Narendra Modi and for his Cabinet colleague Nitin Gadkari, one of the concerns seems to be the faster restoration of road network in disaster-hit Uttarakhand. Sources said during the presentation made by road secretary, Modi showed keen interest in rebuilding the road connectivity to the hill state and asked the ministry to push road construction in the region.

On Monday, Gadkari expressed his displeasure over the progress in restoring and repairing roads in vital border areas including Uttarakhand, which also connect pilgrimage centres in the hill region. The minister ordered a performance audit of the Border Road Organisation (BRO) which is responsible for building and maintaining strategic roads in this area.

The minister took to task some of the concessionaires managing highway projects in some states and warned them that they would not be allowed to charge toll unless the highway were fully operational. The contractors failing to meet deadlines may face serious consequences he warned.

Gadkari also asked the officials from ministry, NHAI and private developers to take urgent measures to overcome prolonged delays, which were causing immense hardships to the people. The minister called for regular monitoring of the progress in all prominent highway projects including Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Punjab, and highways in Uttar Pradesh, J&K, Haryana, Himachal, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu.
