DERC approves 8.32 Percent Power Tariff hike across Delhi; 9.52 Percent in areas under NDMC

The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) on Thursday approved a power tariff hike of up to 9.52 Percent in the national capital. DERC approved a hike of 8.32 Percent  in the case of BRPL, BYPL, TPDDL for FY15. A hike of 8.3 Percent was agreed on for NTPC.

For New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) consumers the rates have been hiked by 9.52 Percent for FY15. The tariff will go up by 10 paise/unit for 0-200 units. A hike of 25 paise/unit will be applicable for 200-400 units for NDMC consumers.

"The tariff hike for FY15 will offset a revenue gap of INR 1,245 crore," DERC said.

Last week, the commission said that the tariff announcements are in line with the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity's directions to maintain regular power supply in the city. The regulator also clarified that the ongoing CAG audit will have no bearing on the tariff announcement.

BSES discoms are counting heavily on higher tariffs in order to make regular payments to NTPC and other generators and also to get financial assistance from banks and lending agencies. Earlier this year, DERC finally acknowledged discoms have a massive regulatory overhang that has to be cleared and approved a INR 8000-crore liquidation plan over an eight-year period.
