Green Highway Policy: For Greener Highways

News

The road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari has given a go ahead to the "Green Highways (Plantation & Maintenance) Policy", which makes it mandatory for the agencies carrying out plantation along highways to maintain them. From now onwards only fruit and shade bearing species such as peepal, mahua, mango, imli, jamun, arjun, seesam and jackfruit will be planted along roads unlike the present practice of planting eucalyptus.

SNP Insights:

The Green Highway policy is expected to give opportunities for external agenices to plant and maintain trees along highways through bidding process. This will not only augment the greener look of highways but also has provisions to replace the water guzzlers like Eucalyptus with different shade and fruit bearing indegenious plants which suits the local soil conditions.
