Lapses on Account of GAIL: How Safe is the Gas Pipeline Network?

Oil regulator has found state-owned gas utility GAIL India LtdBSE 1.14 % guilty of severe lapses that led to an explosion at one of its pipelines in Andhra Pradesh, killing at least 29 persons in June last year.

The sheer negligence on account of India's Largest state owned Natural Gas processing and distribution company GAIL, brings to light the potential threat to safety of the people. While the Government is envisaging to nearly double the Pipeline network to 30,000 kms across the country,such lapses indeed question the operation Grid connected pipeline infrastructure for the company is in this business from last more than 30 years. With increased participation of private companies in the pipeline segment, only stricker norms and higher operating standards can ensure further discipleine in the sector.
