Initiatives Towards Solar Cities: Aims to Reduce the Dependency on Conventional Energy

The six cities - Guwahati and Jorhat in Assam, Kohima and Dimapur in Nagaland, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh and Agartala in Tripura - will be developed under the Development of Solar Cities Program of the union ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE).

The initiative to reduce dependency on conventional energy has kicked off with the plan of Agartala solar city replacing 10% of the power use by solar energy. With the fillip from the government, the project is expected to be implemented at a faster pace. This also may provide a business opportunity for manufacturers of solar panels, batteries etc. With the solar cities emerging in North eastern part of India, the uptapped solar opportunities in these states is about to be explored.
