Some of India's dark patches could soon get futuristic luminous highways. These highways, costing just 15-20 per cent more than regular highways, do not require any street lights and come to light on their own as a photoluminescent coating similar to glow-in-the-dark paint creates ethereal looking lines that get charged by sunlight.

The proposed luminious highways may find better usage in highways and hilly terrains where accidents are very common because of lack of proper lighting. This will not only provide better safety but also help our highways to be self sufficient in energy utilization by reducing the usage of street lights. But the feasibilty and the effective usage of this in indian context needs to be seen.
