WTO Ruling Against India: How Will It Affect?

A World Trade Organization (WTO) panel has ruled against India in a dispute raised by the US over the country’s solar power programme, requiring the government to offer a level playing field to both foreign and domestic manufacturers of solar panels.

SNP Insight:

The ruling can go against the spirit of the agreement between India and US to promote green energy. Although the ruling will not going to affect "Make In India" as very small capacity is proposed under Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) scheme. DCR is the key measure to boost the use of domestically manufactured contents in the solar power plants, thereby reducing imports and per unit cost of generation of solar power plants.
