Unleashing Domestic Solar Cell Production Capacity to 5000 MW/Year: Do India Need to Focus Elsewhere?

News

It is expected that the manufacturing capacity for cells and modules will increase roughly by 2,500 MW and 5,000 MW per annum, respectively. In order to continue to support domestic manufacturing, NTPCBSE 0.45 % had recently awarded 250 MW of solar capacity for cells and modules made in India.Solar Corporation of India has brought out tenders to set up 75 MW solar projects with cells and modules made in India. Some more procurement is also in pipeline which will boost the manufacturing sector in India.

Ambitious plan to meet 100 GW of solar installation is driving major players to plunge into the pool of solar generation and manufacturing segment. Though National solar mission has paved path for smokeless generation, but Indian power sector need to divert focus from generation to distribution and transmission segment. Debt ridden distribution companies are struggling to procure power from thermal generation, where generation is still less costly than solar. Then how can they procure costly renewable power. Ultimately, in the sake of promoting solar generation discoms would further heap themselves with regulatory assets and cost may be passed on to consumers. So need of hour is to revive distribution and transmission segment to spur demand of power, in absence of which, it may result in stranded solar generation capacity due to lack of power purchase agreement.
