Off Shore Wind Energy Policy: To Pave Way for Offshore Wind Development

News:

The Cabinet has cleared the policy to generate electricity from offshore windmills. India is already among the world's top producers of electricity from windmills on land, with a capacity of more than 23,000 MW, but extending the success to offshore regions has not made much progress so far.

SNP Insight:

After long wait, govt finally approves National Offshore Wind Energy Policy. The policy will enable a framework to tap the huge off shore potential of wind in the country and will help to drive the wind energy sector. Since capital investment is very high for the installation, it is to be seen that whether the policy provides level playing field for all investors/developers, as of now the move can be helpful in achieving the target of 60 GW of wind installation by 2022.
