Government to Give Strong Push for Inland Waterways: Future Opportunities

Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari stressed on developing waterways in the country.A bill for launching water transport in 101 rivers, covering 82,000 kms, is pending and it is expected to start within five years.

The Indian water ways inspite of being the low cost mode of transport has been under developed in comparison to the other mode of transportation in India. However, with the recent push from the government, various projects such as Haldia- Varanasi waterways are on pipeline to benefit this sector. Also, innovative projects on sea plane and sea bus has also been initiated opening up wide opportunities. Having said that, the overall sector remains unattractive for investors, for which governement has to take serious steps on reframing the policies and incentive structure.
