Underground Coal Gasification May Strengthen the India's Energy Security Measures

The Union Cabinet has approved auction of coal and lignite mines for underground coal gasification (UCG).

The new apporoval for the underground coal gasification projects may open the door to extract new energy resources from trapped underground coal reserves which are not viable for extraction through mining process. This process is more environment friendly which may provide an alternative source of energy with adressing the environment concerns. Also it may help the country to reduce it's dependency on import of natural gas.
