Spot Electricity Price Surge, an Alarming Drift

Hike in spot electricity is largely due to power plants not stocking coal, inefficiency of CIL and lesser number of allocated railway rakes. Coupled with these issues, delay in payments by DISCOM’s and unforeseen changes made by the state Govt in the PPA’s has resulted in some power producers shutting down entire units as the projects have become unviable and this has led to outages and increased the demand of spot electricity. This situation will worsen if Govt does not take required action on the parties involved.
