Dependence on Imported Coal rises with Grappling CIL Coal Supplies and Surge in Power Demand

Demand this fall has seen a kinky upward trend, Discoms also foresee a surge in power consumption in succeeding months. For Coastal states, coal has been a real problem, as a preventive measures states have relied on import of coal in sight of CIL’s grappling rakes sufficiency to carry fuel from its mines to country’s power plants.

Domestic logistic bottlenecks, regulatory changes and surging power demand will likely increase 2018 thermal coal imports after two years of declines and this may also undermine PM's pledge to cut thermal imports to zero by March 2018.

To revamp logistic issues and revive coal stockpiles, government should accelerate development of critical railway infrastructure else will defy government objective to achieve 100% coal import independence.
