"SAMADHAN" to Avoid Dwindling of Stressed Power Assets Clamping their Liquidation

India has 34 stressed plants with a capacity of 40,000 megawatts, combined debt of the projects is Rs 1.77 lakh crore. The major reasons for stress in the power sector are non-availability of regular fuel supply arrangements, lack of power purchase agreements, promoter’s equity crunch, and regulatory and contractual issues. The government is formulating a novel scheme "SAMADHAN" to revive stressed power assets by selecting 11 stressed project with overall capacity of 12 GW. SBI with some other banks will convert debt to equities which may be purchased by buyer of assets. This will revive some assets to run to make it sustainable assets. The need of hour is to make stressed assets not being pushed to insolvency but to allocate a SPV to hold this asset and run this asset till the situation improves.
