Coal-Solar mix to be Appropriately Matched by Government to avoid Disarray Resulting In Grid Curtailment

Government has over ambitiously elevated renewable energy share of 55% by 2030 in purview of rapid growth in solar projects in the past 2-3 years. Generation from Solar project is seasonal and intermittent in nature. To meet the evening demand, supply has to be backed up by thermal/hydro so as to balance the Grid and provide reliable power to consumers. To Avoid mismatch of demand-supply government must mull over stabilizing base load capacities by reviving stranded capacity of thermal plants or flexible generation capacities like gas & hydro to manage variability.

Coal projects dwindle around issues like long-gestation period & fuel supply uncertainty. These issues has dampened growth in this segment and subsequently segment has not seen any proposal for setting up of thermal projects. Coal cannot be supplemented with renewable power, as it is attributable to reliable power. To strengthen base load and ensure Grid stabilization, government must focus on rejuvenating plants operating at lower PLF.

An outmost huge effort is also envisaged for development of evacuation infrastructure envisaged for such generation targets else would lead to grid curtailment. Government must emphasize on evacuation Infrastructure so that upcoming plants are not plagued by such issues.
