Government Targets to Augment Un-Exploited Hydro Potential in 13th and 14th Plan

The target of achieving 13,300 MW in 13th Plan and 21,150 MW of Hydro Capacities seems to be highly ambitious. Last 12th Years Plan showed continued slippages in Hydro Power Capacities due to several bottlenecks experienced by developers.

India has an enormous natural Hydro resource potential of 148,700 MW. Out of this, only around 45,403 MW could be exploited so far. Hydro Power is attributable to many bottlenecks like R&R issues, Land Clearance, long gestation period, tedious statutory approvals. For Timely execution of planned figures government must ponder over providing a single window clearance mechanism, so as to cut short on delays due to approvals and must ensure that capacity is not bottled-up due to regulatory constraints.
