Inadequate metering data at feeder level may dwindle objective of UDAy scheme

Discoms manage and monitor their AT&C losses by keeping a track of metering data at feeder level. UDAY Yojna launched in 2015 aimed at smart metering consumers with monthly consumption above 500 units by 2017 and 200 units by 2019. This was done to improve operational efficiencies and reduce AT&C losses. Discoms have been futile to achieve metering targets due to implementation inefficiencies, attributing reason such as high cost of implementation, lack of skilled manpower and data integration and inter-operability issues to the slow uptake.

Inadequate data at feeder level affects both billing & collection efficiencies and also discoms could not identify measures to reduce AT&C losses. Consolidating data at the feeder level will not only reduce the cost of implementation but also allow Discoms to understand specific challenges to loss reduction in an area. More importantly, it will help Discoms witness the improvement in energy efficiency that smart metering can bring and thus motivate implementation of the scheme.
