Tatkal free power scheme in delta districts

<p>The Tatkal scheme announced by the State government for provision of free electricity connection to farmers has drawn good response. Under the scheme, which was introduced on September 6, 2017, power connection is being given to farmers on payment of Rs.&nbsp;2.5 lakh for a 5 HP motor connection, Rs.&nbsp;2.75 lakh for 7.5 HP motor and Rs. 3 lakh for 10 HP motor. Farmers have to pay Rs. 4 lakh for a 15 HP power connection. Measures taken by state government for this scheme are:</p> <ul> <li>A total of 7,007 farmers belonging to eight delta districts, including Tiruchi and Thanjavur, applied for free agricultural connection within three months from the date of announcement. Of them, 4,285 paid the one-time fee. Out of the four categories, 7 HP power category has received the maximum number &mdash; 1,589 &mdash; of applications followed by 10 HP (1,220), 5 HP (1,095) and 15 HP (381).</li> <li>Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation, Tiruchi told The Hindu that out of 7,007 applicants, 4,285 of them had come forward to utilise the scheme by paying the stipulated fee. New connections had been given to 2,855 applicants. Steps had been taken to provide connections to the remaining applicants as quickly as possible.</li> <li>Out of eight districts, the maximum number of paid applications had been received from Thanjavur district with 1,515, followed by Pudukottai with 692. A total of 591 farmers had opted to avail tatkal power connections from Karur district. In Tiruchi district, it is 580 and in Tiruvarur 505. It was 52 in Perambalur, 73 in Nagapattinam and 277 in Ariyalur district.</li> </ul>
