Wind Energy likely to experience a downfall in 2020

The Government of India has set a target of installing of installing 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by the year 2022, which includes 100 GW from solar, 60 GW from wind, 10 GW from bio-power and 5 GW from small hydro-power.  This lockdown is likely to hinder pace of development of wind projects in pipeline. Major manufacturers like Siemens Gamesa, Vestas, GE and Inox Wind, have suspended production, as the companies are concerned for health and safety of their employees. Wind sector has already faced troubles like lowering of ceiling tariff, renegotiation of PPA and project execution delays. Though this lockdown has shut production facilities but wind sector in India was virtually shut from the past 2 years.

Lockdown due to COVID-a9 is poised to dwindle India’s wind energy target of 60 GW by 2020.  After upliftment of lockdown it is expected it may take five to seven seeks to normalize operation. Even operation and maintenance across various running sites are also hit as the movement of employees is restricted.
