Deadline for Contractors to Repair Bad Roads

  • “The roads have been damaged within the defect liability period”The Chennai Corporation has asked 36 contractors found responsible for the bad condition of 112 roads to start the restoration work by January 14, its Commissioner P.W.C.Davidar said on Wednesday.Speaking at a lecture on ‘Re-laying bituminous roads using waste plastic - implementation methods' here, he said, “We have identified many potholes on roads re-laid last year. The roads have been damaged within the defect liability period. So the contractors have to restore the road.”

  • The civic body's Works Department issued notice to the contractors concerned two weeks ago but only two of them have come forward to restore the damaged road, he added. If the contractors fail to rectify them , the corporation would rectify the defect and recover the money from them by deducting the amount from the retention money, he added. Mr. Davidar stressed the need for quality and accountability in the process of re-laying of roads in the city. The Chennai Corporation re-laid 241 roads measuring a total length of 142 km at a cost of Rs.62 crore last year, said Mr.Davidar.

  • In a recent inspection, it has been found that 112 roads out of the 241 roads were damaged in the rains. The estimate for the roads damaged in the expanded areas is also being readied. The Corporation had also analysed emails received from residents on prevention of flooding, Mr. Davidar said. Over 300 emails were received and 150 of them were very clear in suggesting solutions. Drainage maps for the expanded areas would also be ready by March, he added.
