Power Tariff Hike; MPERC Invites Objections

  • Setting the ball rolling for hearing of petitions seeking 20 to 27 per cent rise in the power tariff, state Electricity Regulatory Commission (MPERC) has invited public views and objections to it."MPERC has invited objections from public by January 31 on power tariff hike proposals for the next fiscal", an official said.After this month, MPERC is likely to hold a public hearing at the place from where it receives maximum number of objections next month, he added.The three power distribution companies (discoms) - central, east and west having around 70 lakh consumers have filed annual revenue requirements (ARR) of Rs 24,000 crore for 2012-13 along with tariff proposals seeking hike for the next fiscal with MPERC.

  • The Central, East and West discoms have sought a hike of 22.18 per cent, 20.58 per cent and 27 per cent respectively.The west power discom headquartered in Indore has sought 27 per cent hike, officials said.MP is among the seven states of country were the electricity price is at a much higher side.Right now a domestic consumer has to pay Rs 3.30 per unit up to 50 units power consumption, Rs 3.73 per unit for 51 to 100 units power usage, Rs 4.60 for 101 to 200 unit consumption and Rs 4.80 for more than 200 unit power usage monthly, they added.For the current fiscal, the three discoms had submitted ARR of more than Rs 17,337 crore and sought a hike of 25 per cent to mop up finance. However, Commission allowed a rise of 6.14 per cent for meeting the ARR of Rs 12,444 crore. MPERC allowed the tariff rise on May 23 which became effective in June last year.
