Take Urgent Steps to Ease Wardha Road Traffic Jam: HC

  • The Bombay high court's Nagpur bench has asked the Maharashtra government and other agencies to resolve their differences and take urgent steps to ease traffic congestion on the busy Wardha Road, especially near the Khapri Octroi post.A division bench comprising justices PB Majumdar and Ashok Bhangale called on Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) and National Highway Authority of India ( NHAI) to coordinate instead of passing the buck. They were told to remove bottlenecks in smooth flow of traffic on National Highway No 6, which has become a bane for commuters.

  • The court also told highway police that it is their responsibility to ensure smooth flow of traffic on highways. The respondents were told to file reply by February 29. The court's directives came while hearing a suo motu plea on a media report highlighting plight of commuters due to traffic jams on this particular stretch.of Wardha Road due to queues of trucks near the octroi post.Surendra Pardhy, who was appointed amicus curiae, informed that over 20,000 heavy and light vehicles ply on the road daily and there was lack of coordination between various agencies regarding the regulation and control of heavy traffic flow.Earlier, MADC chief engineer Subhash Chahande informed through an affidavit that it had already handed over land to NMC on Wardha Road for shifting the octroi post, which is the primary reason for the traffic congestion. However, NMC counsel Jemini Kasat countered MADC's claims, saying that it was charging exorbitant rent for the land.
