‘Nil Accidents Should Be Goal for Oil and Gas Sector'

  • Safety to ensure nil accidents is of paramount importance in oil and gas sector not only in terms of preventing loss but also enhancing productivity and bottom lines of the undertakings. This was stated by Mr Sudhir Bhargava, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, at a workshop on safety organised by Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD) here on Thursday. He said that the goal should be to achieve nil incident operations. A large number of incidents are caused by human errors in terms of not following the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), lack of supervision and error of judgment, etc.

  • Mr Bhargava said due importance to safety aspects should be given at the design and engineering stage itself. “Organisations have to learn a system of zero tolerance towards unsafe practices”, he added. He called for shifting from prescriptive applications to goal setting in this regard in view of the importance of the sector and its highly capital and technology sensitive nature.Making a case for enhancing capabilities in preventing accidents and fire-fighting by adopting best practices, he cautioned that “we cannot afford to learn our lessons hard way.”The two workshops on the theme “Enhance Capability in Prevention of Accidents & Fire Fighting: Best Practices in Hydrocarbon Sector ” was organised by OISD, an organisation under the Ministry.
