Road Survey Postponed

  • Survey work on the Vytilla-Petta road widening was suspended temporarily after local residents gharaoed two public works department officials for close to three hours. This was following the charge that an earlier formula agreed upon as part of the Kochi Metro Rail project was not being implemented. The PWD assistant engineer, Ms Anuroopa, and the overseer, Mr Joy KT, were surrounded by the protestors when they arrived at Vytilla to lay survey markings.

  • They were finally released when the additional district magistrate, Ms Sujatha, reached the site and temporarily suspended work. The protesters claimed it was agreed during a meeting convened by the district collector on December 2 to widen the stretch by only 26 metres instead of the originally proposed 30 metre.“Even a joint survey was conducted by the public works and revenue departments and local leaders, limiting the widening to 26 metres and a draft plan was prepared. But now they are violating that and sticking to the original plan,” said the Petta-Vytilla Action Committee convenor, Mr V.P. Chandran. The ADM told the agitators that the work would resume only after a meeting with the local representatives and the Kochi Metro officials. The protestors, meanwhile, threatened to lead a protest march to KMRL office on January 1.
