BRTS Spares Trees on Phase II Routes

  • Whenever there is talk of road construction and road widening, one thinks of trees being cut and green patches being levelled by concrete. But the construction work undertaken by the Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL) for Phase II of BRTS seems to be an exception. The AJL has taken care to protect the trees that stand on the new BRTS routes being built.Construction work on new stretches of BRTS has already begun with new routes being carved out in different parts of the city. But the AJL has taken care to protect the city's green cover even as it extends the BRTS' reach to new areas of the city.Talking about their efforts to preserve the trees that stand in the way on the new routes, a senior official of the BRTS said that many changes had to be made in the routes and designs of the routes just to preserve the trees. "Also, the trees that have to be cut will be transplanted at a different location," the official said.

  • The BRTS route from Nehrunagar to ISCON circle had trees right in the middle of the route where the central divider was to be constructed. But to preserve the trees, the AJL built the central divider with the trees in the centre, said the official.'Also, on the ISCON circle - Ambli route, 44 trees were saved after BRTS changed its design. Only seven trees had to be cut," the official added.Similarly, the RTO-to-Chandkheda route had 52 trees on its route. But after changes in the design of the BRTS route, only five trees which were obstructing the mixed traffic lane were cut.The BRTS has kept the environment in mind in its construction work for the new routes of the second phase. It will also be building tree pits along the route where new saplings will be planted. The BRTS routes will have trees planted on both sides. Moreover, landscaping has been done at major connecting circles and char-rasta, the BRTS official said.
