Hike in Coal Prices Led to Spike in Cement Prices: CRISIL

  • Despite double-digit growth in cement demand, the average pan-India retail cement price marginally declined by around 1% month-on-month, to Rs 285 per bag during December 2011. After demonstrating a steep rise over the past few months, prices marginally corrected in December. On a yearly basis, the average pan-India retail cement price registered an increase of almost 21% during December 2011, largely on account of base effect.
  • "Cement players will try to pass on the cost increase resulting from the new pricing policy adopted by Coal India w.e.f January 1, 2012. Hence, we believe that pan-India cement price is likely to rise by 2-3% in January 2012. Moreover, improved pace of construction activity will support demand growth during the month, aiding price rise," said Ajay D'Souza, Head, CRISIL Research.
