Thermal power which includes Coal, Oil & Gas is the major source of the power generation in the country; accounting for nearly three-fourth of the power generation capacity. Coal alone accounts for more than half of the total power generation base of the country.
Thermal power, mainly coal is expected to remain the mainstream of the power generation in the country. XI Plan has placed significant focus on the development of thermal power in the country. The plan envisaged to add 70% (59,693 MW) of the targeted power generation capacity (78,000 MW) from thermal sources during the plan period. As per the Mid- term appraisal of the XI Plan, more than 80% (50,757 MW) of the total anticipated capacity additions (62,374 MW) in the XI plan are likely to be thermal based.
Further, Twelfth plan has estimated a capacity addition requirement of 1,00,000 MW during 2012-17; of this around 70% is expected to be thermal-based. Despite issues such as coal shortages, delays in coal transportation, high carbon emissions, relatively low plant load factors and operational inefficiencies affecting the power generation from coal, it still emerges as the most preferred fuel because of economic and energy security reasons.
Thus, given the importance of thermal power in the country, SNP Infra Research with its latest report “Proposed Thermal Power Plants in India- 2011” has made an attempt to analyse the upcoming thermal plants in the country. The report specifically analyses:
